Teen Ministries
Purpose
The purpose of the following ministries is to meet the practical and spiritual needs of teenagers. Meaningful methods of study and service pave the way for meaningful relationships. These ministries provide opportunities for our teens to serve and be served in the areas of the highest importance.
"Following Christ isn't easy, especially when you're a teenager!" There! We said it. We don't pretend that it's not true, because it is. We won't tell you that it's an excuse, because it's not. The statement is an honest reality. But, what we will ask you is... "so what are you going to do about it?"
At CYLC our goal is to help grow strong, confident, young Christians and have fun doing it. We do this through (click each link to visit section on page):
CYLC Motto:
"On Fire for Christ"
Do you ever think that right now you're just too young to be "On Fire for Christ"? Too distracted? Too busy? Too immature? Just too young right now for Christ to use you in some significant way? Too young to be able to grow and focus your faith on Godly things?
WRONG!
Just think for one minute, how old was Jesus when He began to preach sermons in the temple? That's right, twelve years old. How old was David when he boldly relied on his awesome faith to defeat the Philistine, Goliath? Well, he was only a youth himself.
The Story of David and Goliath (click to read)
And Saul said to David, "You are not able to go against this
Philistine (Goliath) to fight with him; for you are only a youth, and
he is a man of war from his youth."
But David said to Saul, "As your servant I used to keep my father's
sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the
flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from
its mouth; and when it rose against me, I caught it by its beard,
and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear;
and this uncircumcised Philistine (Goliath) will be like one of
them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God."
Moreover, David said, "The Lord, who delivered me from the paw
of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the
hand of this Philistine."
And Saul said to David, "Go, and the Lord be with you!"
So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet
on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. David
fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not
tested them. And David said to Saul, "I cannot walk with these."
So David took them off.
Then he took his staff in his hand; and chose for himself five
smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag,
in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he
drew near to the Philistine. So the Philistine came, and began
drawing near to David, and the man who wore the shield went
before him. And when the Philistine looked about and saw David,
he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking.
So the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me
with sticks (and rocks)?" And the Philistine cursed David by his
gods. And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give
your flesh to the birds of the air and the beast of the field!"
Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword,
with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of
the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have
defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will
strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the
carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and
the wild beast of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is
a God in Israel!"
And so, it was....

CYLC PLEDGE:
I know... God is the beginning and the end.
I know... Jesus chose to die for me. He is my best friend.
Because of this,
I know... I must be determined to live for Him.
Above all things in my life... THESE THINGS I KNOW!
Our Pledge is memorized and recited at the beginning and end of each JAM Session.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but, have everlasting life. John 3:16
JAM Sessions
JAM (Jesus And Me) Sessions is what we call our monthly Teen Night meetings. It's a time when we come together with teens ages 13-18 to experience fun spiritual exploration free from judgment, pressure and negative secular influences. We incorporate interactive group activities, videos, prayer, peer testimonials, guest speakers, music, role playing, and our popular unity circle. We also collect non-perishable food items from CYLC participants to replenish the St. John Baptist Church Food Bank. The Food Bank is one of our community outreach ministries to feed the hungry. Guests (ages 13-18) are welcome at our JAM Sessions.

Unity Circle
The Unity Circle is our time to come together and confront tough topics head-on from a Christian perspective and using biblical principles. We gather in a candle lit circle with a main topic for discussion. Related sub-topics are continually put on the floor by Unity Circle participants. This is what feeds the lively discussions. We conduct Unity Circles at most but, not all of our JAM Sessions.

MAIN TOPIC: Are You Living a Double Life?
SUB-TOPICS:
What does it mean to live a double life?
It means engaging in activities behind your parents backs that you know they and God don't approve of.
So, let's talk about what some of those activities are: drinking alcohol, having friends who are bad
company, listening to explicit music & watching explicit movies, dating secretly, using profanity.
Make no mistake, you don't have to be doing all or several of these. Engaging in any one or two of these
could mean that you're living a double life.
Now take a minute and ask ourselves, "Am I living a double life?"
What are some of the consequences of living a double life?
- You become entangled in lies
- Can develop anxiety/depression or paranoia
- Could become hook on drugs or alcohol
- Could lead to a bad reputation
- Causes broken relationships with family & friends
- Lead to failure in school and wreck you future plans
- Lead to trouble with the law
- Could ultimately lead to your death
Having identified those consequences, let's consider these two scriptures:
"He that is covering up his sins will not succeed, but he that is confessing and leaving them behind will
be shown mercy." – Proverbs 28:13
Feelings of guilt can be healthy, they can cause a person to correct a wrong course. But a person who continues in sin damages his conscience. It becomes insensitive like skin that has be seared and then scarred over. – 1 Timothy 4:2
What motivates some teens to live a double life?
- Peer pressure
- Trying to prove how independent or grown up you are
Let's talk about some ways to combat peer pressure. For example, let's say we're at a party and some of our friends unexpectedly start passing a joint around and passes it to us telling us just to try it. We initially say no thanks but, they don't stop. They laugh at us, and tease us about being scared and say "Come on, just take a couple of hits to see what it's like. You will really like it"
How should we deal with this kind of peer pressure?
For where two or three are gathered in My name, I am there in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20.
Community Service Projects
We also collect non-perishable food items from CYLC participants to replenish the St. John Baptist Church Food Bank. The Food Bank is one of our community outreach ministries to feed the hungry.
“In as much as you did it to the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”
Mathew 25:40
